PM hosted a dinner for the parliamentarians, urging them to support constitutional amendments.
ISLAMABAD city :
The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif hosted a dinner for the honor of parliamentarians on Saturday and challenged them to uphold the sanctity of parliament and to support legislative efforts as per the national interest.
"Parliament is the supreme institution of the country," he said while addressing the house. "It is the best interest of the country and its people that we legislate in the best manner possible."
Shehbaz emphasized that national issues should be resolved through parliament alone and referred to the success the government has had in stabilizing the economy after the risk of default was averted. Political stability, he said, determines the sustainability of economic growth.
Enemies of the state tried hard to push the country towards default, but their plans were thwarted,' said the prime minister. He added there had been attempts at dragging constitutional institutions and non-political figures into the arena of the political dogfight.
Reflecting on past leadership, he said the Charter of Democracy had been signed by former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto to prevent unconstitutional measures. He once again called for unity to drive national development forward, urging a consistent policy that could safeguard the country's future.
The country was moving forward under the leadership of Nawaz Sharif before 2018, but a conspiracy was planned to take him out of the political scene, he said while elaborating that this conspiracy had costed dearly to Pakistan.
Over dinner, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar informed the coalition partners of proposed constitutional amendments that would establish a constitutional court under the Supreme Court. "The amendment is required to create a separate court for matters of public interest," Dar explained.
Members of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Balochistan Awami Party, and the National Party were present at the dinner. They promised the prime minister that they would assist him on the amendment of the constitution.
Prime Minister: He called on lawmakers to ensure their attendance at the next sitting of parliament. The federal cabinet would meet on Sunday at 11:30 am to consider the draft of that amendment that is to be presented in the senate later in the day.
The government is short by eight members to come up with two-thirds majority to pass the amendments and efforts to secure support from the leading figure of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, or JUI-F for short, Maulana Fazlur Rehman have not materialized till now.
